Cebu is home of one of the most successful bottled drinking water brands in the Philippines. Nature Spring Water is a household name when it comes to safe drinking water. Operated by the Philippine Spring Water and Resources, Inc. (PSWRI), the brand supplies water to both local and international markets. To ensure that their products are clean and safe, they make use of state-of-the-art processing equipment. According to their Web site, “Internal PSWRI laboratory tests, and external regular monitoring and inspection by the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) and the Philippine Bottled Water Standard prove the company’s strict and meticulous eye for quality control and utmost norms PSWRI passed the very strict standards.” The brand also boasts of being the only Halal-certified bottled drinking water product in Mindanao after receiving a certificate of accreditation from the Office of the Muslim Affairs (OMA).Nature’s Spring was conceived in 1991, after the super typhoon Ruping (International name: Mike) hit Cebu, paralyzing the whole province. There was no electricity and water distribution was disrupted. People had to rely on unsafe deep well sources. The problems worsened with the outbreak of hepatitis A, cholera, and other waterborne diseases. At that time, there were only a few local brands providing safe bottled drinking water and foreign brands were very expensive. The supply was not enough for the growing demand. The founder of the company felt that Cebu and the whole country needed to have a stable source of safe drinking water. Plus, the local water source’s high mineral content, particularly lime, has caused him to have kidney stones. He and his team went to the United States of America for a comprehensive research and hands-on training regarding the technical aspects of the production of purified bottled water. The first plant and production facility was put up after a thorough market research and extensive product conceptualization and development. They were also aided by foreign expert consultants. They opened their first and biggest plant and office facilities at A.C. Cortes, Avenue, Cambaro, Mandaue City. Currently a leader in the purified bottled drinking water in the country, Nature’s Spring has three huge production facilities. For the Luzon market, they are located in Guiguinto, Bulacan and Calamba, Laguna. In Mindanao, the plant is located in Cagayan de Oro City. They also have five small plants in major locations in the country. Nature’s Spring currently holds around 50 percent of the country’s bottled water market. It aims to further increase its share through the adoption of world-class technology. The company that has been around for more than 20 years is currently making use of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system made by the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). The structure allows them to efficiently structure its business processes and improve operations.

This technology is indeed a great milestone in the Information Technology (IT) industry. According to the brand, the exploitation of the new system resulted in automation, traceability, and accountability of its operations, which streamlined and increased operational production efficiency in its product lines. With its unrelenting success, Nature’s Spring Water gives back to the Filipino community by stepping up during calamities. They provide free supply of deep well water or non-processed water and discounts on their bottled water. They also believe their corporate social responsibility in education and tourism means opening their plant gates to the public by allowing educational tours within their facilities. This also ensures “transparency and confidence in quality.”

I learned that the company that has been around for more than 20 years is currently making use of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system made by the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). The structure allows them to efficiently structure its business processes and improve operations. I also learned that they can produced 22,000 bottled water within 1 hour.
